Your Complete Itinerary

Day 1.  Depart USA We Depart San Francisco via United Airlineso to Hong Kong with connections to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

About Vietnam
Vietnam has opened its doors and welcomes  Americans and other foreign visitors.  It  offers travelers stunning visual beauty and rich cultural diversity that spans over 4,000 years.  Vietnam has undertaken an intense program of economic reforms that have improved the economy, and many American companies have offices there including Bank of America, Boeing and Baskin & Robbins.

For tourists, Vietnam is a land of tree-lined beaches and tranquil bays dotted with the sails of sampans, junks, offshore coral islands, mountains, valleys and plains crossed by countless rivers and rich emerald rice fields.  Villagers in conical hats still carefully tend a patchwork of paddy fields with rudimentary tools while their children ride water buffaloes home from the fields at days end.

It’s also a land of fast paced cities overflowing with a tide of humanity borne along on a swarm of bicycles and motor scooters.  Vietnamese welcome Americans and other foreign visitors.  Changing fortunes are settling into the country to everyones benefit.

Day 2 ( D) After making connections in Hong Kong we arrive at Ho?Chi Minh City (once called Saigon).  After customs formalities, we are taken to the Equatorial Hotel.

About Ho Chi Minh City(Saigon)
Ho Chi Minh is Vietnam’s largest city and river port.  Founded by the French in 1859 and called Saigon by many, it is filled with the French presence of colonial architecture and long tree-lined streets.  The city is constantly on the move with the hustle and bustle entrepeneurs everywhere in a budding free market economy encouraged by government reforms.  English is widely spoken.

Day 3 (B/L/D)  We tour Saigon and the Cu Chi Tunnels. Equatorial Hotel
Today we take a half day city tour including visits to the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Reunification Palace, Ben Thang Market and Chinatown.  After lunch, we go to Cu Chi Tunnels and visit the vast underground network of tunnels built first as a defence against the French, and later expanded during the American war. You will marvel at their ingenuity.  See secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms.  Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of each tunnel before entering - some are easily accessed by stairs.  Wear good walking shoes and sun block for this tour.  After the tour, we dine at a local restaurant.

Day 4 (B/D)  This morning we meet with Vietnamese nurses at Ho Chi Minh City University Hospital.  This afternoon is free. This evening enjoy a dinner cruise.  Equatorial Hotel

This morning we meet with Vietnamese nurses at a local hospital. We will be briefed about the Vietnamese healthcare deliver system and how our nursing colleagues function in this syestem.  We will also have a question and answer session.  This afternoon is free.  Tonight we cruise on the Saigon River onboard the Bonsai I cruise ship and socialize and enjoy Asian and Western cuisines.

Day 5 (B/L/D) This morning we travel to Hue and tour the Old Imperial City and the Imperial Tomb of Emperor of Tu Duc. Saigon Morin Hotel

After breakfast, we travel to Hue by air.  On arrival, we tour the Old Imperial City and the Imperial Tomb of Emperor of Tu Duc.

About Hue
Visitors to Hue are often taken aback to discover that the sleepy provincial town of Hue was the religious, economic and cultural center, Imperial headquarters and political capital of Vietnam until 1945.  One of the most famous sights in Hue, the Thien Mu Pagoda, an octagonal tower of seven tiers, rises majestically over the tranquil Perfume (Huong) River. There you see robed monks chanting their mantra, or novices carefully tending the bonsai garden.

Thirteen Nguyen Dynasty Emperors ruled Vietnam from Hue.  The city suffered damages during the war, but today has regained it's royal demeanor and is a calm, peaceful and relaxed place to visit.  The remaining French colonial garden houses and villas, the quiet streets, the riverbanks, the outlying tombs and pagodas that escaped damage - all give Hue a unique atmosphere of tranquility.

The hills surrounding Hue are dotted with the tombs of the Nguyen dynasty emperors.  Built not only as an eternal resting place, the tombs were designed for recreation where the Emperor could fish, hunt and enjoy the company of concubines in his twilight years.  The Imperial Citadel, which has a 10km perimeter, was built in 1804 by Emperor Gia Long (the first Nguyen emperor) on a site chosen by geomancers.

Day 6 (B/L/D) We take a cruise over the Perfume River and visit Thiem Mu Pagoda, then travel to Hoi An via Danang and China Beach (Remember the TV?series about American nurses in Vietnam)  Life Heritage Resorts

This morning, we cruise on the Perfume River and visit the iconic Thiem Mu Pagoda.  Then we continue along the beautiful coastline of central Vietnam to the thriving city of Danang.  In Danang we tour the famous Cham Museum and China Beach where American soldiers went for rest and relaxation during the Vietnam War. (remember the China Beach TV series)

Next we travel to the beautiful town of Hoi via the beautiful Marble Mountains speckled with caves and shrines.  Finally, we arrive at the town of Hoi where we have dinner and overnight.

Day 7 (B/L/D) We sightsee in Hoi An, then fly to Hanoi.  Sofitel Plaza Hotel

Today we sightsee in Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and exquisitely preserved old merchant town with colorful shops and temples dating back four centuries.

This afternoon, travel back to Danang Airport for our flight to Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam.  On arrival,we go to the Sofitel Plaza Hotel for dinner.

About Hanoi
According to the New York Times “Hanoi is arguably the most beautiful city in Southeast Asia”.  A city of quiet tropical charm borne of 1,000 years of history and struggle, Hanoi is one of the friendliest and most inviting capitals of Asia.  Hanoi retains much of its French Colonial heritage, and the French architectural legacy.  And the abundance of trees and lakes around the city give Hanoi a romantic air unusual for an Aisian city. The heart of the city rests in the Old Quarter, an area of artisians and craftsmen with its temples and pagodas dating from the fifteenth century.

Day 8 (B/L) This morning we sightsee in Hanoi, followed by a visit to Hanoi French Hospital and meeting with Vietnamese nurses .  Later, we’re off to Halong Bay and the most stunning sightseeing in Vietnam.
Halong Plaza Hotel

This morning we meet with Vietnamese nurses followed by afternoon  sightseeing in Hanoi.  Among the sights we will see are: Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh House and the Old City.  After a late lunch,we travel by coach to speectacular Ha Long Bay.

About Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay’s tranquil beauty covers 580 square miles and is speckled with limestone islands and inlets, bizzarre rock sculptures and many grottos.  The sails of junks and sampans against that scenery creates a world lost in time.  Ha Long means “dragon descending” and Ha Long Bay was twice declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site: first in 1994 for its natural scenic beauty, and again in 2000 for its biological interest.  The most spectacular of the bay’s grottos is the beautiful cave of Hang Dau Go with its stalactites and stalagmites resembling beasts, birds, and human forms.

Day 9 (B/L) Cruise on Halong Bay Ha Long Plaza Hotel

Today we take a spectacular cruise on Ha Long Bay via a traditional wooden junk.  We take in the emerald waters and craggy limestone cliffs that make Ha Long Bay famous.  Look out for fisherman casting traditional nets on their floating villages and pearl farms.

Day 11 (B) Today is free for you to follow your own agenda.
