Dr James Sikarskie has been the Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarian at Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine for over 30 years. He was the Veterinarian for the Lansing, Michigan Zoo and has worked with Wildlife, both captive and free-ranging the whole time. He has developed the American Bald Eagle as an environmental biomonitor in the Great Lakes Basin and has a lot of field experience. He has a graduate degree in Wildlife Management (Population Dynamics and Wildlife Ecology) and is a Board Certified Diplomate in the American College of Zoological Medicine. He has been education leader before and his lecture topics were rated extremely enjoyable as well as educational.

The Gallapagos Explorer II is designed to provide comfort and scientific information to its passengers visiting Gallapagos National Park. Expert naturalist guides will offer daily information about the Islands. About Ecuador
Geographically Ecuador is a small country endowed with a dramatic topography and a variety of climatic zones, vegetation, birds and wildlife. Without ever leaving the country, you can move quickly from jungle-rainforest to the high slopes of the Andes, and then down to the Pacific coast, while observing a breathtaking panorama of scenery and nature. As you travel through Ecuador's world of nature, you will be able to follow the courses of rivers broad and narrow; rest along the shores of pristine lakes; explore mysterious caves and marvel at unique plant and animal species that have evolved undisturbed on isolated islands in the pacific - the Galapagos Islands. Ecuador's diversity is echoed by its people whose cultural origins and traditions are formed by their environment.

Day 1 -Jan 9 We depart Miami for Quito via American Airlines at 7:00PM and arrive there four hours later and are met and taken to our hotel, the Four star hotel Mercure Alameda.

About Quito
Quito is set in a hollow at the foot of the volcano Pichincha and in addition to its gorgeous landscape, surrounded by hills and several snowcapped mountains. It is known for its treasures of Colonial churches, monasteries, paintings, sculptures and carvings and the magnificent blend of Spanish, Flemish and Moorish architecture. In 1978 it was declared by UNESCO "Patrimony of Mankind" The city offers 86 churches and monasteries of the 16th and 17th century. Due to its beautiful churches and monasteries, Quito is known as the "Convent of America."Quito is located only 22 km away from the "Middle of the World," at the the Equatorial Line.

Day 2 (B, D) - Jan 10 We visit a veterinary clinic and then sightsee in Quito. Four star hotel Mercure Alameda.

After breakfast we will visit a veterinary clinic for pets (dogs and cats) in Quito and have the chance to ask a professional local veterinarian about his daily practice.

Then we sightsee Quito. First, we visit a viewpoint, called Guapulo, a natural terrace where we will learn about the location of the city on the foothills of the Pichincha Volcano. We will see the spectacular views of the Valleys of Cumbayá and Tumbaco and of the Eastern Chain of Mountains. On a clear day you can see the snow caped Cayambe and Puntas Volcanoes.

Then we visit the old city and experience the colonial history of Ecuador and see streets filled with culture, beauty and intrigue. Your guide will explain about Quito's diverse history. Among the sights we will see are: Independence Square the Government and Bishops Palace, San Francisco Square; the church of La Compañia, which has the most ornate and richly sculptured façade and interior.

Day 3 - Jan 11 (B,L,D) We depart Quito for the Galapagos Islands where we board the MV Galapagos Explorer for our Gallapagos cruise.

After breakfast we are taken to the airport and board our flight to the Galapagos Islands. We arrive Puerto Baquerizo Moreno Airport, San Cristobal Island and board Explorer II at Cerro Brujo, San Cristobal Island.

About the Gallapagos Islands
Galapagos Islands are the highlight of every tour tour Ecuador trip that offers the most unique living museum of evolutionary changes and a variety of exotic species endemic to this Archipelago! Galapagos is the perfect setting to experience the evolutionary changes, which have led to a new understanding of life on earth. Animals unafraid of man, so different from any others found elsewhere, make visitors wonder about their existence on our planet. Among the animals found, are the different species of giant "Galapagos" tortoises that gave the islands their name, and a great variety of birds and marine mammals such as iguanas, sea lions, dolphins, whales as well as a great number of starnge fish. Among the flora, the most distinctive are mangroves and endemic cacti, to mention just a few.

Days 3 – 6 (B/L/D) We cruise the Gallapagos Islands (All meals are included) in the following order:

Day 3 - Cerro Brujo, San Cristobal Island

Day 4 - Punta Suarez, Espanola Island

DAY 4 - Gardner Bay, Espanola Island

Day 5 - Charles Darwin Station & Puerto, Santa Cruz Island

Day 5 - Rabida Island

Day 6 Bachas, Santa Cruz Island where our cruise ends. We return to Quito.

After breakfast we will be taken to the airport, board our flight to Quito, and return to our hotel.

Day 7 (B,) We descend into the Guayllabamba Gorge and sightsee. We visit the Indian market town Otavalo for more sightseeing and shopping. Four star hotel Mercure Alameda.

Today we descend into the spectacular Guayllabamba gorge and village. The Ecuadorian Line goes directly through the glacier of the immense volcano, which shows the highest worldwide point on the Ecuadorian line. On the way you can see the Lago San Pablo with its great background – the rock massive Taita Imbabura.

Since pre Incan times Otavalo is famous for its textiles and the colorful people, Otavalo has hosted one of the most important markets in the Andes for hundrerds of years. During our visit we'll see families wearing colorful clothes and speaking Quichua and Spanish. You will enjoy the endless variety of handicrafts offered at this giant colorful market. The natives here have achieved prosperity from their skill in weaving an endless variety of designs in belts, tapestries and other items.

Day 8 (B,) We visit the Equatorial Line Monument called "Middle of the World." Four star hotel Mercure Alameda.

Today we visit the Equatorial Line Monument called "Middle of the World." Here you'll have the rare experience to stand in both, the Northern and Southern Hemispheres simultaneously. The Equatorial Monument, located as focal point of the park, marks the spot where an 18th century French scientific expedition established the exact position of the Equator. The area has been preserved as a colonial town, with restaurants and gift shops. We will visit the monument and the Ethnographical Museum, which shows the history of the Indian cultures of Ecuador. The afternoon is free.

Day 9 (B,D) Today is free to follow your own agenda in Quito. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner. Four star hotel Mercure Alameda.

Quito is an easy city to wander around. A day's wandering can lead past little explored cobblestone lanes, lively markets, interesting shops, good restaurants and striking views. Among the local tours offered are interesting "Rainforest Walks" where your guides can track local wildlife Look out for leaf-cutter ants!

Day 10 (B,) This morning we return to Miami via American Airlines, arriving there at 11:50AM
