Your Education Leader
Dr. Tara Harrison has been the veterinarian at Potter Park Zoo for over 6 years. She has also done training at the Toledo Zoo, and Wildlife Safari. She has worked with captive wildlife as well as native Michigan wildlife the entire time. She has done work on neoplasia in exotic fields, as well as virulent systemic calcivirus in exotic fields. She has a Masters of Preventive Veterinary Medicine focusing on zoonotic diseases and diseases of wildlife and is a Board Certified Diplomate in the American College of Zoological Medicine. She has been education leader previously.

Your Itinerary
Day 1. (D, S) We depart JFK Airport, New York for South Africa via South African Airways.
Flight information will be provided with your initial registration documents. South African Airways flight SA204 departs JFK Airport, New York at 10:30AM, arriving Johannesburg at 8:35 AM the next day. There is a full inflight meal service aloft.
Day 2. (B, D ) We arrive in Johanseburg this morning. This evening socialize at a welcome dinner at the Legotla restaurant, located on Nelson Mandela Square.. Protea Balalaika Hotel
This morning we arrive in Johanesburg and are cleared through customs and taken to our hotel, the four star Protea Balalaika hotel, loctated in exclusive Sandton. Tonight we dine, drink and socialize at the Legotla African theme restauran.
About South Africa
There’s much to see in South Africa. Watching the big five wild life: - elephnat, lion, rhino, leopard, buffalo, exploring Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities and sightseeing along its unmatched cultural and wine routes (along with wine tastings) or watching whales do acrobatics in the ocean.
The price of your tour to South Africa is about the same as a good escorted tour to Europe. However, South Africa is a rare place to visit with more for you to see that you may never have the chance to see again. Your dollar goes far there. And South Africa has world-class amenities and hotels. So, in addition to great game viewing you will enjoy spectacular sightseeing with all of the comforts of California.
Day 3. (B, D) Today we visit the Pretoria School of Veterinary Medicine and the De Wildt Cheetah Project. Protea Balalaika Hotel
Today we attend to our professional agenda and visit the Pretoria School of Veterinary Medicine for a meeting with our colleagues , then we visit the De Wildt Cheetah Project. This facility's main aim is to breed rare and endangered species and conduct scientific studies upon these animals in all aspects of their lives and to promote public awareness about them.
Day 4. (B, L) This morning we sightsee in Johannesburg, followed by lunch and a meeting with our colleagues at a private veterinary practice. This evening is free. Protea Balalaika Hotel
Day 5. (B, D) We travel to Kruger Park with our driver and guide to Kruger Park. Kruger Gate Hotel
This morning we depart for Kruger Game Park. We will have lunch when we arrive, followed by an afternoon open vehicle game drive. Our headquarters at Kruger Park will be the four star Kruger Gate Hotel.
About Kruger Park
Kruger National Park was established in 1898, a national treasure and the crown jewel of the South African Parks Board, It covers 21,000 sq km of lowveld, and is about the size of Wales. One of the best managed national parks in the world, it has the largest variety of animals of any game park in Africa, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and many varieties of antelope. Because of strict enforcement of conservation laws, the wild game is still abundant there. Kruger Park has 132 mammal species, 438 species of birds, 104 reptile species and over 2, 000 plant species.

Day 6. (B, D) We take morning and afternoon game drives, followed by a visit with Kruger Parks Veterinarians. Kruger Gate Hotel
Today we begin with an early morning game drive. This afternoon we attend to our professional agenda and meet with our colleagues practicing veterinary medicine at Kruger Park.
Day 7. (B,L,D) We travel to the famous Kapama River Lodge for game viewing in a luxurious setting..
Today we go to the luxurious Kapama River ?Lodge for more game drives in a gorgeous setting.
About The Kampama River Lodge
Kapama River Lodge, situated in Kapama Game Reserve is the perfect blend of luxurious safari accommodation and spectacular views. It’s stylish and beautifully positioned along a dry riverbed and each room features a full bath and terrace with uninterrupted views of wildlife. There is a large swimming pool with sun umbrellas and recliners for lazy afternoons and a relaxation lounge sprawled around the pool. The Rhino Boma dining area with tables arranged by a roaring outdoor fire gives a glow to evening meals. Buffet-style meals with African dishes and international fare are offered. A water hole just beyond the perimeter fence attracts animals including antelope, elephant and buffalo. Cable TV and internet connections are also available.
Day 8. (B,L,D) This morning we enjoy more game drives. This afternoon we visit Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center. Kapama River Lodge
About The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center
The Hoedspruit Edangered Species Center was originally founded with the aim of breeding cheetahs. This species remains a focal concern at the Center. After the infrastructure and holding facilities were established, African wild cats, black-footed cats (small spotted cats), wild dogs and blue cranes were incorporated into the breeding program necessitating it be named the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center.
The Center keeps detailed “studybooks” of its species, as prescribed by The World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WASA), with its regional branch (The Pan African Association of Zoos, Aquaria and Botanical Gardens.
There will be opportunities for “hands on” activities here.
Day 9. (B, D) Today we visit a commercial game farm, then travel on to Hazyview and Protea Hazyview Hotel.
We visit a commercial game farm and learn about “Commercial Game Farming “ in South Africa. Then we return to Hazyview and the Protea Hazyview Hotel for overnight.
Day 10. (B, In flight meals) After breakfast we travel to Johannesburg Airport and board our return flight to JFK Airport. South African Airway flight SA203 departing at 8:15?PM, arriving at JFK?airport at 8:00AM the next day.
Day 11. We arrive back at JFK Airport in the early morning.
CAPE TOWN EXTENSION
Day 10. (B,) After breakfast we travel to Johannesburg to board our flight to Cape Town. Victoria Junction Hotel
After breakfast we travel to Johannesburg and board our flight to Cape Town, arriving there in the late afternoon.
On arrival we will be taken to the four star Victoria Junction Hotel, located on the on the fringe of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. The hotel is designed for the cosmopolitan traveler and is one of its kind in Africa.
About Cape Town
Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, is often referred to as the Monte Carlo of Africa and has recieved many awards as the best city to visit in all of Africa.. It is the legislative capital of South Africa where the National Parliament and many government offices are located. Cape Town is famous for its spectacular scenery including the Cape Floral Kingdom, Table Mountain and Cape Point (known to Americans as the Cape of Good Hope) where you see the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.
Most of South Africa’s great wines come from this region which include the nearby towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch where frequent wine tastings are a way of life. The “Wine Route” as it’s known is a truly beautiful drive through green mountain country dotted with vinyards and estates with Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture.
Day 11. (B, L ) This morning we explore Cape Town and Table Mountain. This afternoon we visit the Cape Peninsula Victoria Junction Hotel
This morning we sightsee in Cape Town. Among the sights we will see are Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Comany Gardens, the Malay area of the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town Castle and Table Mountain and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
This afternoon we travel to the Cape Peninsula via Sea Point, Clifton and Llando to Houte Bay and continue over Chapman's Park to the Cape Point Nature Reserve and see the Cape of Good Hope where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. Along our way we have lunch at Bertha’s Restaurant.
Day 12. (B, L) We travel to the Winelands for a a winetasting visiting the historic city of Stellenbosch and the Moyo Spier Estate. Victoria Junction Hotel
We depart Cape Town for the Winelands, winetasting and visit to the historic city center of the oak-lined town of Stellenbosch. Stellenbosch is the center of South Africa’s wine industry. We have lunch along our way and a wine tasting.
Day 13. (B) Free day in Cape Town Victoria Junction Hotel
Today is free. Perhaps you’ll visit Robben Island, a former political prison where South African President, Nelson Mandella was held for decades. Those seeking adventure can cage dive with Great White Sharks in nearby Gansbaai. (Naturally you will be in a protected area.)
Day 14. (B) We board our return flight to JFK?Airport, New York. We leave Cape Town in the afternoon and connec to South African Airways flight SA203 departing Johannesburg at 8:15?PM, arriving at JFK airport at 8:00AM the next day.
Day 15. We arrive back at JFK Airport, New York in the early morning.
