Your Complete Itinerary
Day 1. We depart New York for Jordan. ( D )
We depart New York in the evening via Royal Jordanian Airlines flight RJ262 arriving in Amman the following day. A full meal service will be served aloft.
About Jordan
Jordan is a modern country with an ancient culture where everything works . Its people are friendly and literate and warmly welcome visitors. Jordan’s history is overwhelming: Amman, Jerash and Umm Qais were cities of the Roman Decapolis, while biblical sites range from Bethany-Beyond-The-Jordan, where Jesus was baptised, to Mt. Nebo, where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. At Petra, Nabeteen stonemasons carved out their awe-inspiring capital from towering sandstone walls (also, the setting of an Indiana Jones movie). Jordan also offers the desert landscapes filled with castles and wadis (dry desert river valleys) that fascinated “Lawrence of Arabia.” Tourist accommodations are world class and Jordan’s hotels on par with four and five star European hotels, with all of the amenities you would expect.
Day 2. We arrive in Amman and stay at the four star Century Park Hotel. Tonight we socialize at a welcome dinner. ( B,D) Century Park Hotel.
We arrive in Amman late in the day and will be taken to our hotel, the four star Century Park Hotel, located close to the touristic center of town, offering TV, restaurants and a night club. On our way we will have a brief orientation tour of Amman.Tonight we will socialize at a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
About Amman
Amman, the moderrn and ancient capital of the Hashimite Kingdom of Jordan, is the center of all Jordan and has excavations dating back to 3,500 B.C. Called Rabbath Ammon in the Old Testament, Amman was capital of the Ammonites during the reign of King David (1200 BC) and has been actively engaged in trade with Greece, Syria, Cyprus, Babylon and Mesopotamia throughout recorded history. Its clean leafy western streets, trendy cafes and polite residents makes Amman an interesting pleasant city to visit. And its 6,000 seat Roman theater is still used for cultural events.
Day 3. ( B, L) We sightsee in Amman, then visit the famous desert castles that the early Arab rulers loved.
Century Park Hotel.
This morning we start sightseeing and visit old and new Amman. Among the sights we see are the Citadel, the 6,000 seat Amphitheater (built in 200 AD by Roman Emperor Antonius Pius) , Temple of Hercules, Omayyad Palace, Byzantine Bascilica and Jordan Archaeological Museum.
After lunch, we journey into the desert and visit castles that date back far into history. The early Arab rulers’ love of the desert inspired them to build castles where they pursued horse racing, hunting and hawking. As you walk through them you can almost feel the past evenings filled with poetry, soft songs and perfumed gardens as they were centuries ago. Their fine mosaics, frescos, stone carvings, inspired by the best Persion and Greco-Roman traditions tell about desert life in the eighth century AD.
Day 4. (B, D) We meet with our colleagues at a local hospital. After our hospital visit, we visit Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist.
Century Park Hotel
This morning we meet with with our colleages at a local hospital in downtown Amman and gain insight into our profession in a different setting. After our meeting we drive to Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan, known in Arabic as Al-Maghtas (Baptism Site). This is where Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist, and where the first five apostles met, and where the prophet Elijah ascended into heaven in a chariot. This site was discovered in 1994 when the remains of churches, caves, and Baptism pools were unearthed. In March 2000, Pope John Paul II authenticated the site.
Recently, CNN has carried a newscast that the oldest church in the world is located in this area.
Day 5. (B,D) We travel to the beautifully preserved Roman city of Jerash, deservedly one of Jordan’s major attractions. .
Century Park Hotel.
Today we travel to Jerash, a sprawling ancient city with a 6,500 year history, and see one of the best preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. In its day Jerash had a population of 15,000 and was an administrative center of the Roman Empire. Preserved under sand for more than 1,000 years, Jerash will give you a clear idea about how the Romans once lived and how far-reaching the Roman Empire was. We will visit the Amphitheater, ruins on the Citadell Hill, Hadrians Arch and the Elliptical Forum. After our visit, we will continue on to Qulat al Rabad, the ancient Arab castle dating back to the Crusade. Incidentally, 90% of Jerash is still unexcavated.
Day 6. (B,L) Today we visit the ancient sites at Madaba, one of Jordan’s most important Christian sites; then drive on to Mount Nebo where Moses is said to have first seen the “Promised Land.” We end our day in Petra. (Golden Tulip Hotel)
Today we travel from Amann to the ancient city of Madaba, followed by a visit to Mt. Nebo and the memorial to Moses. Late this afternoon we reach the rose-red rock city of Petra.
About Madaba and Mount Nebo
The ancient city of Madaba is 20 miles south of Amman along the 5,000 year old Kings Highway. It’s an easy going city, famous for its spectacular Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics and the site of Greek Orthodox church of St. George, where a vivid sixth century mosaic map (originally 25X5 yards) of the Holy Land rests. Actually, its the oldest known map of the Holy Land.
Mount Nebo is the place where Moses first saw the Holy Land of Canaan and where he is believed to be buried. Six tombs have been found hollowed out of rock beneath the mosaic covered floor of the Moses Memorial Church at Mount Nebo. In the church presbytery you can see these mosaics, the earliest of which is a panel with a braided cross. The Serpentine Cross , standing outside the sanctuary, symbolizes the brass serpent taken by Moses into the desert and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. During his visit to Jordan Pope John Paul II held a sermon here that was attended by thousands of the faithful.
Day 7. (B,L) We visit the ancient lost city of Petra. We stay overnight in Petra.
(Golden Tulip Hotel)
Today we visit the ancient rose-red city Petra - a world wonder. This ancient city, hewn in rock by the Nabataeans, is where parts of ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ were filmed. Petra is famous for its massive architecture, pools, dams and water channels. Among the sights we will see are: The Royal Tombs, the Treasury, the Court, Roman Theater, Museum of Petra, Monestary, Place of Sacrifice.
Tonight we stay in Petra. Perhaps we will walk through the Siq to the Khazneh following a candle-lit path with the haunting Bedouin music drifting through our ears.
About Petra
Petra, one of the most exotic attractions in the Middle East, is worth the trip from America in itself. To visit Petra by day is an awe inspiring experience; by night with its 1,800 lighted candles, Petra is an mystical experience . Lost in the desert sands until it was found in 1812, it is the ancient capital of the Nabataean Arabs who ruled the area in pre-Roman times. It probably goes back much further in time since a Neolithic village dating back to 7,000 BC was unearthed nearby in 1950. Set on the edge of the Wadi (gully) Araba, Petra is the site of hundreds of elaborate buildings colored deep rust and carved out of solid rock. The history goes on and on. The first sight you’ll see when you enter Wadi Musa is a small white-domed building , the Moses Spring (Ain Musa), where Moses struck a rock and water gushed out.
Day 8. (B,D)We return to Amman after visiting a Bedouin hospitality camp. This afternoon is free for shopping. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner at our hotel. Century Park Hotel
Day 9. We return to New York. (B, D)
Late this morning, we go to the airport and check-in for our return flight to New York. Our flight to New York departs Amman at about noon and arrives back at JFK airport in the early evening.
